Purple Coo Book Club

Winter Reading for the Purple Coo Book Club

Here is the suggested list of books.

Please make your 1st and 2nd choices in the comment box. I'll collate the votes and put the most popular book choice on the Book Forum. Then we can all put the book on our Santa list and hope.....

Eve Green by Susan Fletcher

A haunting tale set in rural Wales. A flame haired, motherless eight year old is sent to live with her grandparents and it takes a while to reveal her hidden past.

Last Goodbye by Arvin Reed

A tale of love and murder set on the mean streets and in the sleek society haunts of Atlanta.

(Hopefully this is the right book as I wasn’t given the author’s name and there are LOADS of books with this title)

The Birth House by Anni McKay

A gripping saga about a midwife’s struggles in the wilds of Nova Scotia

The Blood Detective by Dan Waddell

A plot full of genealogical intrigue and murder linking a gruesome past to crimes committed now – well it would make a change.

The Eustacia Diamonds by Anthony Trollop

A fast moving classic, with diamonds thrown in for good measure

The Meaning of Now by Michael Cox

A darkly Gothic Victorian type murder mystery

The Outcast by Sadie Jones

Set in the South of England in the 1950s, it’s the story of a boy who becomes estranged from his family after witnessing a terrible, tragic accident.

Uncommon Arrangements by Katie Roiphe

Seven Portraits of Married Life in London Literary Circles 1910-1939. A brilliant study of marriages ‘a la mode’ among the Bloomsbury set

White Tiger by Aravind Adrga

A Man Booker prize-winner. A tale of two Indias and a man of amoral character. The bleak life of an Indian village versus the glittering prizes apparently available in the big city.

(The painting is Memory in Green by Giuseppe Santomaso - oil 1953)

I might have voted for The Eustace Diamonds but is the 3rd book of the Palliser novels. It might be better for folk to read the others first.

Hello from a constant reader.

My choices:
1. White Tiger (think that my library has already ordered it for me ... ahead of US publication!)

2. The Eustacia Diamonds (am sure that same library probably has a first edition that I can check out!)

Thanks to all for all the other recommended books. Many were totally new to me, and I will try them out.

(we did The Outcast this week for one of my bookgroups and everyone gave it an 8/8.5 which is one of our higher scores so I do recommend it to people. No snow. No c word (not the one you're thinking!)

Well I had better vote for The Eustace Diamonds, as I proposed it.
It is a stand alone novel and no background is required to appreciate it. One or two minor characters drop in, as it were from other novels but it is not part of an ongoing saga. The book - the story of Lizzie's four lovers and the theft and re-theft of diamonds is a saga in itself.

I'll vote White Tiger as number two.
